Lifespan Religious Education
Summer is here and that means games! Childcare is provided during the Sun services and high school youth will be there with, Diane, to play games with children of all ages. There may even be water balloons, so join in the summer fun on Sundays.

Lifespan Religious Education
To those of you who were present at the RE Sunday Service, I am so glad that we were able to highlight the year in RE together and send off the bridgers with great support from the community. I am deeply sorry that I was not able to celebrate at the barbecue with you due to my worsening respiratory virus after the service. I needed to rest, even though I wanted to be at the barbecue with you all. I was looking forward to the individual conversations we would be able to have in that setting. I realize that you wanted to be able to express your appreciation and send off our family, so I apologize for missing that opportunity.

I will be at CUUC the next two Sundays and look forward to seeing those of you who will be attending those services. I appreciate each of you as remarkable unique individuals and the vibrant community you make together.

Barbara, Nora, and I are grateful for the gift of your presence in our lives. Thank you for embracing us within the CUUC community and collaborating with me to create the best possible RE ministry to support each person's faith development. It will be great to see where your commitment, energy, and care take RE next. It is the community of people that makes CUUC what it is.

Join us for a night of fun with fellow high schoolers. Bring a game and a friend!

Social Time for Adults
Those who would like more time to chat and just be together are welcome to continue hanging out in Fellowship Hall after the meal. Come to simply get to know your fellow CUUCers better, without specific programming.

A multigen worship celebration of the year in Religious Education that includes:

• Banner parade for all classes to start the service
• Participation by all ages

Lifespan Religious Education
As Dean Silverberg informed you through his special announcement, I have accepted a position at the New London UU congregation and will be leaving CUUC this summer. Although I look forward to my new position, it is difficult to leave CUUC where I feel connected to you all and proud of the work we have done together. As I explain in my resignation letter to the Board and REC, affordability of housing in Westchester is the reason for our family's move. I will make sure everything is in place for the next RE leader and support the transition. On Jun 10, we have our always great RE Sunday Service and it will be good to be together to celebrate the year in RE and all we have accomplished.

K-7th grade start in the sanctuary for a Wonder Box Story about immigration with special guest Yency Contreras.

Classes end at 11:15 so teachers and parents can attend the Annual Meeting. Children will be supervised on the playground or in Fellowship Hall.

RE News: Sun May 27

Lifespan Religious Education
Our Coming of Age Service last Sunday included a family COA ritual in which parents named something that they are going to let go of as their youth move from childhood into young adulthood. Their statements were reinforced by lighting flash paper in our chalice that vanished before our eyes. This action brought home the visceral feeling of letting go and connected with all the ways we need to let go in our lives. The Bridging Ceremony at the RE Sunday Service on June 10 will be another letting go ritual, showing us the stages of independence that children, and the adults in their lives, move through. Of course, as attested to by the recent story about the 30-year-old Hudson Valley man who was evicted by his parents, we know the process does not happen overnight or in a linear fashion, but our rituals help us recognize the need to shift the orientation of the relationship as the stages of life unfold.

June 3 - Regular RE with review and preparation for RE Sunday. This is a great way for your child to capture the meaning of the year and what it was all about, whether having attended each week or infrequently.

June 10 - RE Sunday Service and Barbecue - Our meaningful celebration of the year in RE that includes the banner parade for all classes, children's participation in the service, and the Bridging Ceremony for high school seniors.

Each year CUUC offers two scholarships in the amount of $250 for our graduating seniors. One scholarship is given in honor of Sylvia Schnall-Pierorazio and the other Rev. Betty Baker, both former CUUC Directors of Religious Education.

Please send a short essay on your contributions and leadership at CUUC, with a brief explanation of how the scholarship will be used and the names of two CUUC references to dlre@cucwp.org by May 31.

RE News: Sun May 20

Lifespan Religious Education
The process of coming of age from a faith development perspective is a lifelong one. We are continually coming into our own as we move through various stages of life. As Unitarian Universalists, we embrace the never-ending unfolding of our spiritual evolution in which revelation is ongoing. Our 8th-9th graders will mark the culmination of their Coming of Age journey in RE this Sunday at the service they will lead. When they read their faith statements, it will not mark the end of their faith development path, only a rite of passage along the way. Each time we witness the COA Service as adults we are inspired by the youth and are reminded of our own ever-changing understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

Lifespan Religious Education
There are ways in which the Variety Show is a unique, amazing event. It is a convivial gathering outside of Sunday morning that is truly intergenerational. Performers and audience members are of all ages. It is rare in life today that we hold events that bring together the generations. We have a great time and raise money for an important cause. This is the most fun you can have while raising money for those in need. Your own enjoyment is benefiting others. The show gives everyone the opportunity to perform. Children and adults who might not otherwise take the stage do so on this evening and those are moments to behold. Join us this Saturday to raise money for the New American Children’s Cultural Enrichment Fund, as we enrich our sense of beloved community.

Norbert Capek, a UU minister who founded the Unitarian Church in Czechoslovakia, was looking for a way to unite his congregants through a spiritual experience together. In 1923, he created the flower ceremony that we hold each year. His wife Maja, also a UU minister, introduced U.S. congregations to the ritual when she visited. Tragically, Norbert perished in a concentration camp during WWII, but the beautiful ritual he created lives on in UU congregational life. Just as we bring different flowers to the service, we each bring our unique self to this congregation and in our exchanges we bask in each other’s beauty. When you take a different flower home this Sunday, you take with you a symbol of the connections made and all that blossoms from gathering in this faith community.

Each year CUUC offers two scholarships in the amount of $250 for our graduating seniors. One scholarship is given in honor of Sylvia Schnall-Pierorazio and the other Rev. Betty Baker, both former CUUC Directors of Religious Education.

The Variety Show is a unique event at CUUC. It combines social justice, entertainment, socialization, food, and music into one spectacular multi-generational gala. We raise money for an important cause (The New American Children’s Cultural Enrichment Fund), while having a great time watching CUUCers and friends of all ages perform their special talent, whether juggling, dancing, singing, or telling jokes. Lifespan Religious Education
It is powerful to have an experience that reminds you that you are not alone, especially in the context of your hopes for the world. This Sunday is Earth Day and we are fortunate to have the opportunity to celebrate with our fellow Westchester UUs. In addressing climate reality this Sunday, we can feel the power of our combined voices. Children always find it eye-opening to realize that Unitarian Universalism is not just within our walls and there are other people in the world who share their faith. Our special Earth Day program brings us together for worship, RE, environmental justice, and racial justice. It follows on the footsteps of the high school Youth Con being hosted at CUUC. It will be quite a weekend and a wonderful reminder that we are greater together, than alone.

What could be more appropriate during the month of faith at CUUC than attending Faith Development Friday? Last month's gathering had 40 attendees, as Rev. Meredith facilitated the third session of Faith Like a River and our Family Journey Group continued. The Unitarian Universalist concept of faith is an ongoing action of discernment and discovery, in which knowledge and questioning add to the strength of our personal life compass. "Faithing," as James Fowler calls it, "is a process of wrestling meaning from life and subjecting it again and again to the scrutiny of our minds, the leap of our hearts, and the reality of action." Lifespan Religious Education
After finding the hidden afikomen (Passover matzoh) on Fri, doing an Easter egg hunt at my wife Barbara’s workplace on Sat, and joining the CUUC Easter egg hunt on Sun, our daughter Nora arrived at Aunt Donna’s house Sun night to find an Easter basket prepared with goodies and blurted out, “Oh no! Not again.” You might feel this way when you think about celebrating Passover this Sun, but you will find our Passover Service to be interactive, interesting, and fun for all ages. It will be good to honor this important holiday in our congregation. We are bringing the elements of a Passover Seder into our regular Sunday service, with a meal to follow, so it is accessible to everyone. There will be explanations of the rituals to go with the readings, songs, and matzoh breaking. I look forward to sharing this with you on Sunday.

All ages are in the sanctuary for this interactive multigen service. (Childcare is available for those who need it.)

Learn about and celebrate Passover, the important holiday about freedom, through our regular service that will contain Passover Seder elements and seat us all at tables in the sanctuary. The meal will follow the service in the sanctuary and close with the children's search for the afikomen (matzoh hunt) and a final blessing.
