Music: Sun Feb 4

Sunday morning’s music was “purchased” at our 2016 Goods and Services Auction by Catherine Kortlandt. Ever ebullient and enthusiastic, Catherine requested musical works associated with Joy. Accordingly, the CUUC Choir will perform J. S. Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Our Desiring”, the concluding chorus from the composer’s Cantata No. 147. The German-language text proclaims: “Jesus will always be my joy, My heart's comfort and essence, Jesus is there through all suffering, He is my life's strength, The desire and sunshine of my eyes, My soul's treasure and bliss; Therefore I will never let Jesus go, Neither from my heart nor from my face.”

The morning’s Offertory is a lively arrangement of 3 Dog Night’s hit “Joy to the World” with our own Kim and Christian Force, Spencer Mann, Marty Kounitz, and Joann Prinzivalli. The Centering Music includes Federico Mompou’s Charme—French for “Spell”—“To Inspire Joy”, as well as two of Joaquin Turina’s colorful Danzas Fantásticas, each of which is prefaced by a quote from Jose Mas’s novel La Orgía (Take a guess at the translation…). Thus, “Exaltación” reminds us of the figures in that incomparable picture… moving inside the calyx of a flower,  and “Orgía” describes how The perfume of the flowers merged with the odor of manzanilla, and from the bottom of raised glasses, full of the incomparable wine, like an incense, rose joy. The Choir’s performance of “All You Need Is Love” heralds February’s monthly theme of Love.
